Technical FAQ

This FAQ covers some of the common technical questions our customers ask us. You may be able to find the solution to a problem you have encountered by consulting this page. However, don't hesitate to get in touch if you should require assistance.

Getting Started

How do I make my domain point at my new 5quidhost hosting account?

Answer:

This is done via what is known as a 'nameserver update'.

In our setup e-mail you will find two nameserver values. You need to log into the interface provided by your domain registrar and find the 'nameserver update' or 'change nameservers' option.

Having done so, it should just be a case of copying and pasting our nameserver values into thr appropriate boxes on the page provided by your domain registrar.

Note: Some registrars require both the nameserver names and their IP addresses, others require only the names.

After a propagation delay of 24-48 hours, your domain will resolve to your hosting account with us.

How do I upload my website to my 5quidhost hosting account?

Answer::

You can use either the 'File Manager' icon on your control panel with us, or an FTP program to upload your files. A popular FTP program is 'Filezilla' which is available free to download for most platforms here.

Note: There is no need to create a separate FTP user - you should use the username and password provided in your setup e-mail to log in via FTP.

Note: Only files you upload to the 'public_html' directory will appear on your website.

I've uploaded my files, but my website isn't displaying! Am I doing it wrong?

Answer::

Make sure you've uploaded your files to the 'public_html' directory, and not into the root of your account. Only files placed in this special directory will appear on your website.

Make sure also that you've updated the nameservers for your domain, and have given the nameserver update plenty of time to propagate (24-48 hours). You might try turning your computer and modem/router off and back on again to flush any residual DNS caches.

When I log in via FTP, I cannot retrive a directory listing or perform any actions. Why?

Answer::

Try enabling 'passive' mode in your FTP program. Not all FTP programs will detect the need to switch into this mode, although some will.

What are the correct settings to publish the website I've created in 'Dreamweaver'?

Outgoing mailserver: mail.yourdomain.com (where 'yourdomain.com' is the domain you're hosting with us)

MySQL

I cannot create databases via 'phpMyAdmin', how do I create these?

Answer::

You need to use the 'MySQL' icon to create the databases you require, creation privileges within phpMyAdmin are not enabled.

The MySQL user I've created cannot connect to the database I've created!

Answer::

You need to use the 'MySQL' icon to add the user you've created to the database you've created, with appropriate privileges. Only users which are added to databases in this way can access the databases in question.

I cannot connect to my database from a remote location!

Answer::

You need to use the 'Remote MySQL' icon on your control panel to add your own IP address to those which are allowed to connect. If you're not sure what your IP address is, you can find out by visiting a site like this.

You must also tell us what your IP address is so that we can adjust the firewall of the server in question to let your connection through.
